At first, it’s a furious beat, metronomic and obstinate, as if to bite and jostle. Then a nasty funky-technoide riff settles in, played on a vintage Moog. With heated tires, QONIAK can let loose. And “letting loose” for Vincent Membrez (synth) and Lionel Friedli (drums) means imagining themselves in a secret lab and behaving like slightly crazy iamese scientists. They turn the knobs of an 80s Pro-One keyboard at random and see what happens. They take contemporary jazz and dissect it with techno-industrial blades, math-rock scalpels, superimposed tempos, or rhythmic breaks borrowed from Meshuggah. One foot in Area 51, the other in the underground of Stranger Things, "experiment belly to the ground," proclaims QONIAK! And the appetite does the rest.
